Mountain Biking Death Road near La Paz, Bolivia

Hands: frozen. Feet: numb. Pants: soaked. Shoes: dripping.

The rain felt like icy pellets as they greeted my speeding face and hands. Gravity was providing the trust and my body was numb from the cold and rattled from the mountain bike careening into countless rocks. To the left, a shear 90-meter fall into the gorge below: to the right, a straight vertical cliff complete with the occasional waterfall. Splitting these two boundaries was a ten-foot wide section of rocks and dirt, Death Road.

There are times when shifting off your emotions is required to complete the task/challenge at hand.  Speeding and winding down Death Road is a situation where fear increases the danger. With a perfectly vertical fall several feet from where the bike is jarring over rock after rock, your mind cannot waiver and allow doubt to enter. Because mountain bikes are uncomfortable and awkward when traveling too slowly, keeping a significant amount of speed is also a requirement. Mountain biking death rock is a engaging, bone jarring, nerve straining thrill ride that no one should miss if they are traveling in Bolivia.
